Author's Notes: I listened to the song prompt finally, and I needed to come up with a less nasty another take on the theme. So this is it. The title comes from the last words of the song.

"I can never take his place. I know that."

She spoke with no emotion, her voice clear and strong. She stared him down, asking for no confirmation or denial.

"You and I will never speak of him," he said.

She insisted. "Just this once."

He took her arms in his large hands, gripping hard. "I know what you've had to do to survive in this world. His death was not your fault. I will never seek to avenge him through you."

Her dark eyes glittered with gratitude.

"He was your first," she whispered. "I will strive to be your last."
