Author's Notes: I don't pretend to be an expert about this pairing, but I know as a man with a very strong conscience, I've sometimes made decisions that hurt the person I love. I think conscience is the key to Arthur's character, and it really explains everything about him. And ultimately Lancelot couldn't resist that character and was lifted up by it. Sorry if that sounds incredibly corny.

"I beg you!" he said, but his eyes said more.

'How could you betray our love?' they screamed.

Arthur tried to answer in kind, tried desperately to convey his wish for Lancelot to have the freedom he craved, tried to say goodbye.

Tried and failed.

How could he explain that his conscience would not allow him to go, how if he did, he would never be free, would never be the same man?

Yet somehow Lancelot had understood and had come back.

Damn him.

He looked down at the still face and silently screamed.

'How could you betray our love?'
